Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades acknowledges the Wadawurrung people as the Traditional custodians of the land on which we operate. We acknowledge their unceded sovereignty over Wadawurrung Country, and the ongoing hardship and trauma as a result of colonisation. About this workshopLearn about an historic casting material and how to cast items from a mould.Gutta percha is derived from tree sap harvested throughout Indonesia and Malaysia and traditionally used to produce a variety of objects.Soft when heated and hard when cooled, gutta percha was found to be a more durable option to the use of rubber (then commonly used for insulation and casting medical items) because it didn’t deteriorate in wet or extreme climatic conditions.       When introduced to England in the mid-1800’s gutta percha was quickly embraced for industrial applications including piping for water reticulation, manufacturing, safety equipment, medical equipment, and insulation. The material was also applied to production of domestic and decorative objects including daguerreotype and photograph frames, walking sticks, crockery, furnishings, and jewellery items.Products, machinery and miners’ safety equipment created from gutta percha were exported across the western world – and were a prominent feature of life on the goldfields in countries such as Australia and America.Use of gutta percha was widespread into the early 20th Century, then declined when WWI and WWII limited access to quality raw product. Though still an element in mining industry manufacture, gutta purcha has been more broadly superseded by newer materials such as polyethylene and resins.In this workshop, students will explore methods used in simulating the use of gutta percha in creating and casting a mould of an old photo case, making their own family heirloom. They will learn how to prepare a resin mould, how to pour their mould, and how to create a cast book cover with bound papers. At the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a bound book made from scratch using a metal binding technique.
