Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades acknowledges the Wadawurrung people as the Traditional custodians of the land on which we operate. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and to all of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live and work on Wadawurrung Country. We acknowledge their unceded sovereignty over Wadawurrung Country, and the ongoing hardship and trauma as a result of colonisation. The history and continuous culture of the Wadawurrung people is an important part of our shared story.

About this workshopSprang is a braiding on stretched threads technique that can be traced back to the Neolithic in Europe and is found historically worldwide including examples in Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. It is a versatile way of making an elastic interlinked fabric. Unlike many other textile techniques it is entirely warp based and can be used to create textured or lace type fabrics as well as simple, stretchy structures such as bags and caps.      Begin with an exploration of Sprang from its earliest roots to recent history before learning the basic interlinking technique and stitch variations to create different effects. Learn to finish the work and how to manage larger projects.                           Over the day, fashion sample pieces and a small bag to take home.
