Aaron Smith

Hands on, challenging, fulfilling.

My teacher at trades school was the last locksmith at Pentridge and I suppose I caught the bug from there. I’m now a teacher too as a master locksmith at Melbourne Polytechnic. My degree is a Bachelor of Science (Locksmithing). My studies have taken me to the UK and Europe to further my interest in the conservation of locks, keys and restoration.

Aaron Smith makes, repairs and restores old locks across Australia through his business The Keyhole Surgeon. In 2004, he completed a pre-apprenticeship at North Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT), now Melbourne Polytechnic, and commenced an apprenticeship. In 2018, Aaron undertook a Fellowship and travelled to the United Kingdom and Europe to study heritage lock making, conservation and restoration. Aaron is committed to passing on his knowledge and skills to keep his rare trade alive.
