Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades acknowledges the Wadawurrung people as the Traditional custodians of the land on which we operate. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and to all of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live and work on Wadawurrung Country. We acknowledge their unceded sovereignty over Wadawurrung Country, and the ongoing hardship and trauma as a result of colonisation. The history and continuous culture of the Wadawurrung people is an important part of our shared story.

About this workshop 
Begin your journey into the world of chairmaking with Windsor Chairmaker, Jon Grant from Tasmania. In this 5-day intensive you will make the elegant Democratic Chair. Designed by American master craftsman, <a href="https://www.curtisbuchananchairmaker.com/" target="_blank">Curtis Buchanan</a>, the Democratic Chair tells a story of accessibility and legacy. This chair can be made with affordable and readily available tools which allows more people to experience the joys of chairmaking and carry the rare trade into the future. Jon will guide you through the process from start to finish. You will learn to use traditional hand tools such as a drawknife to facet the legs, post, spindles and crest. At the end of the workshop, you will take home your beautiful and comfortable Democratic Chair and the knowledge and skills to make a matching set.

Snacks, lunch, water bottle, notepad and pen.

Workshop appropriate - closed toe shoes, no hanging jewellery, hair tied back

Small class size – max 6 participants

All instruction, tools and materials provided

You will gain a strong understanding of Windsor chairmaking, learn the dynamics of timber and build skills in using handtools.
